Freudian neurosis stalks Gaurdianworld

It's like one of those murder mysteries where a possible victim leaves a letter in a bank vault for future readers, saying who did it and why, or a Freudian neurosis where terrible and murderous thoughts against other are inverted into fear for self. Toynbee is seriously worried that all the bile and venom she has produced will lead to retribution. The barbarians are at the door.
He’s targeted the BBC and Channel 4, and the Tory manifesto has plans for a constitutional upheaval and an attack on human rights
Listen with fear to his message: he has distilled it down to pure Faragism, reprising the spirit [old weasel] of Vote Leave’s “breaking point” poster and “70m Turks”. His party’s veins flow with Brexit party poison....That old populist template casting honest working people as being deceived by “the elite” echoes down the centuries from the far right...[It is based on] gut nativist “build the wall”, us-and-them fear of foreigners.
There is a proposal for electoral reform, which she has also advocated, but
One that suits Tory electoral interests: gerrymandering boundaries, rejecting proportional representation [as did the whole population in a referendum]  and making it harder for non-Tories to vote. Poorer renters and students on the move, those without passports or driving licences [ that old ID beef again]...Curbing postal votes [another source of potential fraud] harms Labour voters most [well - -Labour candidates in Tower Hamlets anyway] . Expats will get the vote, but long-resident tax-paying EU citizens are denied.

We will be a 'third country' as the EC keeps telling us -- should you be able to vote if you share some imagined community? Why not give Commonwealth citizens the vote? Can UK citizens living long term and paying tax vote in French or German national elections?

“updating” means leaving the European convention on human rights,[the only safeguard she thinks] us alone with Belarus.[a bit of 'racism' here?]  ..  Judicial review, the [wealthy or well-connected] citizen’s guarantee against overmighty government, will be stopped from being “abused to conduct politics by another means”.
Can anyone still maintain this is not exactly what G Millar and co managed to do?
Be very afraid, as Johnson takes revenge on the legal system, on remainers, on human rights and on any democratic aggravations that stand in his way...The BBC expects the worst after Johnson’s assault yesterday on the licence fee....expect no restraint from within his party. Johnson expelled all defenders of rights [defenders of rights!] ...When the economy tanks due to his Brexit blunders he will do what the far right always does, distracting attention on to foreign “enemies”, using crude racism and attacks on “elite” judges, civil servants or any upholder of rights.
The real bone-chilling danger comes from the impulsive, dictatorial, egotistical, absolute power [he will suspend elections to Parliament altogether?] of Boris Johnson unchained. But if every anti-Johnson, anti-Brexiter votes tactically against him, he can still be stopped.
I maintain it was the Remainers who politicised the courts, and ludicrous often vicious moral hectoring and activism that discredited the BBC and C4 (and the Graun). For Toynbee, the only effective safeguards of human rights is the EC.If a government attracts a majority, the usual situation, that somehow turns into an assault on democracy, while a hung and powerless Parliament maintains it. She still thinks racism is what fuels Leave.

The whole Graun world must seem at risk, a novel experience for the petite bourgeoisie,  and one they are not very good at managing.

Of course Johnson is an awful choice for people like me. But  the way it has all panned out means he is the only one likely (no more) to deliver Brexit, alas.
